Your roof is one of the top components of your home that deserves attention, due to the fact that it takes the biggest beating out of all of your home’s exterior. As a result, it is important to make sure that the roof is taken care of maintained, following basic rules such as keeping the rooftop clear of debris and clearing your gutters. That being said, it is still important to get an inspection done regularly to ensure that no nasty surprises appear. It is recommended by the National Roofers Contractors Association that your roof is inspected twice a year, once after the winter, and once after the summer. Why during these times and these frequencies? Here are 2 reasons why.
#1. These Are The Most Volatile Seasons
Winter is known to be the harshest season of the year, testing the strength of your roof with rain, wind, hail, and extremely low temperature. It is also the time where destructive formations like ice dams tend to form, leading to an increased likelihood of water to seep under your shingles and cause leaks. On the other end of the spectrum, summer usually means high temperatures and humidity, leading to risks like cracking roof components from expanding due to temperature changes, increased chance of insect damage, moisture damage, and mold. There is of course a chance that these could also happen during the spring and fall, but the probability is higher during these seasons.
#2. There Is The Potential For Stronger Storms
In addition to more drastic weather conditions overall, summer and winter also run the probability for more storms as well, where things can get even harsher for the exterior of your home. In winter, strong snowstorms can leave a large amount of snow on your roof that can easily become ice dams if not appropriately dealt with, as well as hail that can dent, or in extreme cases, break roof shingles to the point where they may need to be replaced. As for summer, constant exposure to heat can dry up and crack shingles, and the increased humidity can lead to more rain and thunder, worsening any existing leaks and cracks. Therefore, it is important to make sure that any damages incurred from these storms are immediately fixed after the end of the season.
